Why the range is so wide
- Corrugated/exposed-fastener and standing-seam systems are not priced the same.
- Steel, aluminum, zinc and copper have very different material costs.
- Valleys, dormers, skylights, chimneys and steep slopes increase fabrication and labor.
- Tear-off, decking repairs and ventilation work may be separate allowances.
Don't compare metal bids by total alone
Ask each contractor to identify the metal, coating/finish, gauge or thickness where relevant, panel profile, fastening system, underlayment, flashing details, ventilation plan and workmanship warranty. A lower bid may simply specify a different system.
Energy claims need climate context
The U.S. Department of Energy notes that reflective “cool” roofs can reduce cooling load, but the benefit depends on climate, insulation and HVAC conditions; colder climates can also experience a winter heating penalty. In other words, “metal saves energy” is not a universal dollar figure.
